Predrilling and countersinking

In woodworking, pre-drilling is an important step to avoid cracking and splitting the wood. Choose a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screw diameter and drill a hole where the screw will be placed. If you want a neat finish, consider also using a countersink drill to make a tapered recess into which the screw head can countersink.
